Behavioral Red Flags: The Human Signals

1. Sudden Disgruntlement or Workplace Conflict

This one gets dismissed too quickly as an HR problem. But CISA's insider threat research consistently identifies workplace grievances as a precursor to malicious insider activity. An employee who's been passed over for promotion, put on a performance improvement plan, or publicly clashed with management is statistically more likely to act against organizational interests.

2. Working Unusual Hours Without Clear Justification

Someone logging into sensitive systems at 2 AM on a Saturday when they've never done so before deserves a second look. Especially if they're not in a role that requires off-hours access. Threat actors — internal ones included — prefer to operate when nobody's watching.

Check your SIEM logs. Pattern deviations in login times are one of the easiest insider threat indicators to automate alerts for.

3. Resistance to Security Policies or Audits

When an employee pushes back on multi-factor authentication, refuses to comply with access reviews, or gets aggressive about monitoring policies, pay attention. In my experience, most employees grumble about security controls but comply. Active resistance — especially from someone with privileged access — is a different signal entirely.
